Indoor Air Quality and HVAC: What the System Can and Cannot Do

EPA describes three main indoor-air strategies: control pollutant sources, ventilate with clean outdoor air when conditions allow, and use filtration or air cleaning as a supplement. An HVAC filter can reduce some airborne particles while the system runs, but it cannot remove every pollutant or replace moisture control, ventilation, source removal, or medical advice.
Use the three-part approach
- Source control: remove or reduce smoke, moisture, dust-generating activities, chemicals, and other identified pollutant sources.
- Ventilation: bring in clean outdoor air when weather, outdoor air quality, and safety conditions permit, or use properly designed mechanical ventilation.
- Filtration: use a correctly fitted filter the HVAC system can accommodate, and replace it before it becomes overloaded.
Choose filtration the system can actually handle
EPA recommends at least MERV 13, or the highest efficiency the system fan and filter slot can accommodate. A filter that does not fit, is installed incorrectly, or creates excessive airflow resistance can undermine performance. Ask an HVAC professional when system capability is uncertain.
Control moisture, not just particles
EPA advises keeping indoor humidity below 60 percent and ideally between 30 and 50 percent. Recurring condensation, drain problems, damp materials, or mold require correction of the moisture source; adding a filter does not solve a water problem.
Health symptoms need the right professional
HVAC Agent and an HVAC service company do not diagnose illness. If occupants have severe or persistent symptoms, contact a healthcare professional. For a carbon-monoxide alarm or suspected CO exposure, move outside, call 911, and do not reenter until responders say it is safe.
